Overview
The Marketing Manager leads the Orchestra's marketing strategy and delivery, strengthening its profile, growing and deepening audiences, and supporting ticket sales and organisational priorities. The role combines strategic planning with hands-on campaign, content and communications work in a small organisation. It turns audience insight into relevant marketing and uses performance data to improve reach, engagement and conversion.
1. Marketing strategy and planning
- Develop and maintain an integrated annual marketing plan that supports the Orchestra's artistic program, ticket revenue, audience development, fundraising and wider organisational objectives.
- Translate organisational priorities into campaign objectives, audience propositions, channel plans, schedules and measures of success.
- Plan concert and season campaigns from awareness through purchase, attendance and repeat engagement, coordinating with Business Development, artistic leadership and management.
2. Audience segmentation and growth
- Use available ticketing, customer, website, email and social data to understand audience behaviour, identify segments and develop targeted communications.
- Attract new and under-reached audiences, nurture first-time attenders and encourage repeat attendance and loyalty.
- Apply audience insight to campaign timing, content, channel choice and calls to action; test and refine approaches based on results.
3. Digital, content and social marketing
- Set the Orchestra's digital and content direction and maintain an editorial calendar for concerts, artists, education programs, organisational news and stakeholder communications.
- Create, commission, edit and publish content across the website, email and social channels, including LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and other relevant platforms.
- Produce or coordinate copy, graphics, photography and short-form media; keep website content accurate and aligned with campaign and ticketing journeys. Maintain an organised archive of assets, permissions and records.
4. Campaigns, paid media and ticket conversion
- Plan and deliver concert and season campaigns across organic and paid social, digital advertising, email, website, print and media activity as appropriate.
- Manage paid media within approved budgets, defining targeting, creative, landing destinations and conversion measures.
- Work with ticketing and relevant colleagues to make purchase information clear, improve calls to action and reduce friction in the path to purchase.
- Monitor campaign delivery and ticket sales, adjusting targeting, creative, spend and timing in response to performance and program needs.
5. Brand, communications and public relations
- Protect and strengthen the Orchestra's brand, ensuring consistent visual identity, tone and quality across channels and publications.
- Develop and apply brand guidance and oversee the quality of marketing materials produced internally or by suppliers.
- Lead day-to-day marketing communications and coordinate public relations activity, including media releases, story development, press enquiries and interview opportunities.
- Build productive relationships with artists, venues, media, partners and internal stakeholders; ensure communications are accurate, timely and appropriately approved.
- Support donor, sponsor, business development and organisational communications with relevant colleagues.
6. Analytics and reporting
- Set practical measures for audience growth, engagement, campaign effectiveness, website activity, ticket conversion and paid media return.
- Use available analytics and ticketing reports to track performance, identify trends and recommend improvements.
- Provide regular updates to management on campaign delivery, audience response, results, risks and budget use, and apply lessons to future activity.
7. Budget and supplier management
- Prepare and manage the marketing budget in line with approved plans and delegated authority, tracking commitments and expenditure.
- Source and coordinate external suppliers such as designers, photographers, printers, media and digital specialists; agree briefs, timelines and deliverables.
- Monitor supplier quality, deadlines and costs, maintaining clear records of approvals and work completed.
8. Collaboration, compliance and general duties
- Work closely with Marketing, Business Development, artistic leadership and management to deliver coordinated organisational activity.
- Coordinate any assigned marketing support or freelance contributors, clarifying briefs, priorities and deadlines.
- Handle personal and organisational information responsibly, following organisational policies, confidentiality requirements and POPIA obligations.
- Perform other reasonable duties that support the Orchestra's marketing, communications, brand and audience objectives.
Requirements
- Relevant qualification and experience in marketing, digital marketing, content or communications, with evidence of planning and delivering campaigns.
- Practical understanding of digital and social media, audience targeting, content planning and paid media.
- Ability to interpret campaign, web, social or ticketing data and use it to improve marketing activity.
- Strong writing, editing and communication skills, with sound judgement across brand, public relations and stakeholder communications.
- Confidence creating or briefing visual and digital content; photography and basic design skills are useful.
- Experience managing budgets, suppliers and multiple deadlines, with the ability to prioritise and deliver in a small organisation.
- A collaborative, organised and resourceful approach, with attention to detail and a willingness to execute as well as plan.
