About this role

We’re on the lookout for a digital content specialist to join us as soon as possible on a fixed term contract to March 2025. You’ll play a critical role in helping establish an exciting new digital short course product offering – think Masterclass or BBC Maestro, with a Natural History Museum twist. This is an opportunity to prove your content skills in a creative, agile environment where you will collaborate with colleagues across a range of disciplines, from user research and design to science subject matter experts. Plus, you’ll be able to drive impact with content that helps customers satisfy their curiosity about the natural world, while generating funds to help deliver our mission of creating advocates for the planet.

We’re looking for an experienced content professional to oversee the delivery of multimedia content within a new digital product from the Natural History Museum. The Digital Content Manager (Subscription) is responsible for ensuring we deliver new content monthly that delights and meets the needs of paying customers. They will design and execute content plans, carefully manage external resource to help deliver content to deadline and within budget, and be able to get stuck in with writing, video editing and digital asset design as required. They will collaborate with their colleagues across a multidisciplinary product team to adopt a test and learn approach, continuously improving the content to better meet the needs and desires of paying customers and to optimise conversions, retention and income from the product.

The role has no formal line reports but will be required to manage, coach, edit and oversee the work of other content creators, including internal colleagues and external freelancers or agency staff.

In this role, you’ll work on:

  • Planning and executing content plans
  • Hands on content creation (filming, editing and designing, both written and multimedia content)
  • Briefing, managing and feeding back on the work of other content creators
  • Driving continuous improvement of content in a live product, including through testing
  • Crafting messaging and contributing to content marketing
  • Content audits and driving continuous improvement
  • Engaging key content stakeholders, including subject matter experts

Please refer to the Job Description for full details of the responsibilities of this post.

What we’re looking for

  • Proven experience in digital content creation (including video), production and management

  • Writing ability: Brilliant writing and editing skills, with the proven ability to create accessible, inclusive and useful content, including from complex, technical and scientific source material
  • Supportive: Ability to coach, support and influence content creators and subject matter experts to get the best possible result
  • Analytical: Knowledge of content testing and driving up performance through data

Experience working within working a similar organisation, such as a museum, gallery, membership body, media company or third-sector organisation, could be desirable, but not essential. The same goes for experience of working on paid-for or subscription-based content products – if you’ve got it, we’d love to hear about it.

If you’re not sure you meet all the criteria above, we encourage you to apply anyway

About you:

  • Fired up by our mission and the challenge of building a loyal movement of advocates for the planet
  • Excited to work as part of a multidisciplinary, non-hierarchical product team, alongside other designers, researchers, developers and marketers working collaboratively towards the same goal
  • Passionately curious about customers and dedicated to improving their experience of the product
  • Committed to equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Comfortable with uncertainty, you look for solutions proactively and always keep the bigger picture in mind
  • A stickler for detail, you take pride in making sure our content meets high quality and accessibility standards
  • Excited about working with scientists, researchers and other experts to help communicate their knowledge to an audience of armchair enthusiasts
