The National Arts Centre (NAC) is Canada’s bilingual, multi-disciplinary home for the performing arts. The NAC presents, creates, produces, and co-produces performing arts programming in various streams-the NAC Orchestra, Dance, English Theatre, French Theatre, Indigenous Theatre, and Popular Music and Variety-and nurtures the next generation of audiences and artists from across Canada. The NAC is located on the traditional, unceded, unsurrendered territory of the Anishinabe Algonquin Nation.

Job Reports To: Senior Manager of Communications

Key Activities

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Communications, the Communications Strategist for the NAC Orchestra is responsible for the overall storytelling for the NAC Orchestra’s performances and initiatives to increase awareness among its key stakeholders, target audiences, and Canadians across the country. A strong writer and content creator with attention to detail, the Communications Strategist will oversee the development, production and implementation of communications strategies and tactics, and be responsible for reporting on results.

Working in close collaboration with the NAC Orchestra team, as well as the Marketing, and Digital Experience and Design teams, the Communications Strategist is responsible for media relations and coordination of online and printed house programs, and will plan and create content and stories for dissemination through various channels, including social media, the NAC website, reports, and targeted communications to stakeholders.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Leverage strong storytelling skills to create and disseminate engaging content that resonates with target audiences;
• Apply strategic and analytical thinking to developing, implementing and monitoring communications strategies for the overall NAC Orchestra season and its concerts, activities and initiatives, and reporting on results to internal stakeholders;
• Write persuasive and compelling content, including online stories, social media posts, news releases, web content, projects/events credits and descriptions, letters, video scripts and other communications, as required;
• Secure and grow media coverage for concerts, events, tours, album launches, and other initiatives;
• Increase national and international awareness of NAC Orchestra through earned and owned media;
• Work closely with the NAC Orchestra team to develop and nurture strong communications networks to effectively engage with stakeholders in the NCR and across Canada;
• Plan and execute in-person and online events for NAC Orchestra announcements and initiatives;
• Coordinate content for digital and print house programs;
• Provide media coaching and talking points as required;
• Update and grow media contact database.

Skill Requirements

• University degree in communications, journalism, music or a related field and a minimum of (3) years of relevant experience;
• Ability to communicate verbally in both official languages (public and media relations) and in writing (copy, editing and storytelling);
• Excellent knowledge of classical music and a sincere interest in arts and culture
• Strategic and analytical thinking, sound judgement, strong sense of initiative and proactivity when tackling projects
• Strong attention to detail and time management skills;
• Ability to work in a team and on occasion, take on a leadership role;
• Astute ability to prioritize, with efficient decision-making and demonstrated ability to work under pressure while managing tight deadlines;
• Excellent interpersonal skills;
• Project management skills;
• Proficiency in using MS Teams, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
