Position purpose:

Under the guidance of the Sport Information and Digital Media Officer, contribute to the enhancement of the university’s reputation by assisting in the execution of sports information and sports media relations strategies for the varsity athletics programs. Assist with the development of print, media and web content according to Varsity Athletics plans to project a positive image, promote the Gee-Gees brand, and increase the visibility of the varsity athletics programs and their alumni.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

Sports Information: Assist in the execution of an annual communications plan that supports the varsity athletics program communications needs for various internal and external target audiences, contributing to the strategic plan and the Gee-Gees brand. To this end, write, film, or edit content for programs, newsletters, brochures, speeches, scripts, web, social media and press releases and coordinate translation of all content following priorities identified by the Sport Information and Digital Media Officer. Verify, edit and control the quality of sports information posted on the Varsity Athletics website and disseminated to the media and the public through official channels as required.

Web content management: Contribute to generating and updating web content in line with a plan established by the Sports Information and Digital Media Officer while ensuring compliance with web, official language and accessibility standards and established policies.

League compliance: Assist the Sports Information and Digital Media Officer in fulfilling procedures for conference and national (OUA/RSEQ/U SPORTS) sport regulations, deadlines, and content as it relates to varsity sports information; execute procedures for reporting results.

Photography, videography and webcasting: Assist in the execution of photography, videography and webcasting needs for Varsity Athletics, including video editing, assisting with team photos and headshots sessions, and special events (e.g. banquets). Act as a resource for accredited photographers and videographers on game days. Provide support to the Sports Information and Digital Media Officer in the planning and execution of the home varsity teams webcasts as required.

What you will bring:

  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in communications, public relations, sport management or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2 years of proven experience in sports information, journalism, public relations or sport management, preferably with a university athletics department
  • Sport knowledge across the scope of varsity programs in a university setting
  • Bilingualism – English and French (spoken and written)
  • Proven knowledge of digital, broadcast and print media and an appreciation of the rapid pace at which stories evolve in a 24/7 communications environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills, exhibits diplomacy and tact
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a proven experience writing newspaper-style articles
  • Strong visual communication skills, strong comprehension of branding and visual storytelling
  • Experience interviewing subjects for the production of profile or reaction communications pieces
  • Experience in using computer software, such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, video editing, Adobe Creative Suite, and database applications
  • Ability to predominantly work non-traditional hours during peak periods of the competitive season (August to April)
  • Familiarity working with OUA/RSEQ/U SPORTS requirements

The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.
